After twenty years, we’re withdrawing from Afghanistan. Most of us likely don’t know enough of the details to understand whether it was the best decision. However, one thing is certain, interpreters and other Afghans who have supported the American cause will likely pay a high price, once we--their employers and protectors--leave.

The violence many of them face has been well documented. So much so that there’s a program--Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs)--meant to help our former allies escape. Though potentially well-intentioned, the program is deeply flawed: SIVs are meant to take no more than nine months, often take more than forty months, and can take as long as ten years. In the meanwhile, Afghans desperate for help are often exploited or left even more vulnerable (paying fees to scam artists who promise to help with expediting the process, exposing themselves through lines or mandated medical examinations necessary to get the SIVs). We, and our international allies, often hide behind bureaucracy and red tape, making excuses about what we can, and cannot, do.

At least 300 interpreters, and their families, have been killed because our system has failed them, because we’ve broken our implicit and explicit promises.

There are many issues that need solving. We can't save everyone. But we can do the right thing here. America has a moral obligation to save at least the interpreters and their families, to stop the almost certain torture and death they face if we abandon them.

We've accomplished this very challenge before, as we pulled out of Vietnam.

We’re capable of fulfilling this promise; of not allowing false promises to be our legacy.

We just have to choose to care.
