Release Mali the Asian Elephant to Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary

This is Mali, She has been held captive for over 35 years at the Manila Zoo in the Philippines. She lives in a concrete enclosure that is no bigger then a small living room. She has no grass or trees, no water to bathe, no toys or friends. Mali has not seen another elephant in over 35 years.

Mali was brought here to the Manila Zoo when she was three years old. She was left all alone in the same empty enclosure she is in right now, today.

She stands on the hard concrete 24 hours a day.

Her whole life has been spent in a barren concrete enclosure, with no stimulation whatsoever. This has provided her with zero opportunity to engage in any of the activities that elephants need for their physical, mental and emotional health.

Just like you or I, thirty five years in solitary confinement, would most likely lead to profound depression. As it has for Mali who paces incessantly or sometimes just stands as still as a statue, her trunk dragging on the ground.

Mali’s confinement to the concrete enclosure has led to severe foot problems. It’s the leading cause of death among captive elephants. Without the proper care, which she is not getting at this time, her foot issues will become unbearable.

Foot problems plus mental suffering and loneliness may not leave much time for her. That is why we must speak out now.

Mali has been denied the absolute basics of a natural life. The Manila Zoo could have broken up the concrete and put in a pond, dirt, some green trees. That would have helped her feet considerably. I think they have proven that Mali’s comfort or well being is not a priority.

Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary is a real option for Mali. To quote their website…BLES is passionately devoted to creating a safe and natural home for Thai elephants. We care for rescued and retired elephants, allowing them to interact freely within 500 acres of forested land. There are no performances — just elephants.

PETA, has been working hard for years to help free Mali. They have raised the money to transport Mali safely to BLES, where they will welcome her with open arms. She will spend the rest of her life in a natural environment, where she will be loved and cared for.

What is keeping Mali from reaching Bonn Lott’s is the Mayor of Manila. I think more public outcry is needed to change his mind.

This is Mali, right now, today. She is so lonely she can often be seen holding her own tail. Holding tails is primarily done when a baby is holding onto its mother’s tail. But Mali only has herself, so she holds her own tail. Please help free this poor lonely elephant and convince the mayor of Manila Joseph Estrada to let her go to Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary. Mali has given over 35 years to the Manila Zoo. It's time for the City of Manila to give back to Mali.
