Jonathan Djanogly - Make Votes Matter
Why this petition matters
This is our letter to Jonathan Djanogly, everyone who agrees with us are encouraged to sign this petition. Your name will be added to our list of signatures.
"Dear Jonathan,
Our First Past the Post voting system has never looked so broken. Once again we have a government that most people didn't vote for, with the Conservatives winning a majority of seats on less than 44% of the votes.
Thousands of us are denied a voice in politics, millions more are forced to vote tactically, and Parliament doesn’t even come close to reflecting how we voted.
In 2019, 78% of all votes in the Huntingdon constituency and 70.8% of all votes in the entire country were wasted under First Past The Post. These wasted votes had no impact on electing any MP to the House of Commons¹.
The House of Commons, elected via First Past the Post does not represent the people of the United Kingdom. Governments are consistently formed without a majority of the popular vote. This is inherently undemocratic. A change to a proportional system does not mean a switch away from constituencies, simply that these constituencies are switched to a proportional system or a party list top-up that can maintain the true representation of the country.
Governments are consistently formed without a majority of the popular vote. This is inherently undemocratic and unjustified. A change to a proportional system does not mean a switch away from constituencies, simply that these constituencies are switched to a proportional system or a party list top-up that can maintain the true representation of the country.
Previously, you have claimed that the 2011 AV Referendum proves that the people want FPTP. In truth, a majority of the public support electoral reform. In fact, no British Polling Council member has ever found FPTP ahead of Proportional Representation in any poll².
Today, we, the below signatories of this letter jointly declare that the British electoral system is broken. Councillors, political parties and residents of Huntingdonshire, ask that you back and support a change to a proportional system in the Commons and not support First Past the Post in any future election.
This is beyond party politics. This crucial flaw with our democracy must be fixed. MPs from across all parties have already backed Electoral Reform. People from all political viewpoints are campaigning under the ‘Make Votes Matter’ banner for PR; it is your duty as our representative in parliament to represent us. All we ask is that you help us Make Votes Matter.
We call on you as our Member of Parliament to:
1. Publicly support switching the House of Commons to a Proportional Voting System with a constituency link.
2. Join the PR Alliance and sign the Good Systems Agreement.
3. Campaign for the Conservative Party to support a Proportional Voting System.
Sincerely,
(your name)
