STOP THE RAMPANT KILLING OF INNOCENT ANIMALS AT SEAACA ANIMAL SHELTER

STOP THE RAMPANT KILLING OF INNOCENT ANIMALS AT SEAACA ANIMAL SHELTER
The Issue
JUSTICE FOR SEAACA ANIMALS! Stop the rampant and senseless killing of shelter animals at Southern California shelter (Southeast Area Animal Control Authority ) in Downey CA (https://www.seaaca.org Located at: 9777 Seaaca Street
Downey, CA 90241. Phone: (562) 803-3301.
This shelter has a long history of corruption, inhumane treatment to its animals and manipulates its statistics to justify their killing. This shelter has the most abysmal statistics of any shelter in Southern California. They killed OVER 10,000 animals in 2019. They provide little to no public posting to rescues or pet owners to save these unfortunate animals. This is more than double the percentage of other shelters in the Los Angeles area. Only at SEAACA is an animal actually more likely to be killed at the shelter than to exit the shelter alive.
This letter further includes statistics and audits showing SEAACA fraudulently inflates it’s “save” rate. Seaaca touts a 99% live release rate of adoptable animals, but can only achieve that save rate by excluding 1) Owner surrenders, 2) Animals that SEAACA reports to have behavioral issues, 3) Injured animals, 4) Sick animals, 5) Feral cats and 6) Un-weaned kittens. Furthermore, SEAACA’s exclusion categories are so broad, it is almost impossible for an animal killed at SEACCA to not to be excluded from their save rate. No other Los Angeles area city or county shelter excludes categories of animals when calculating their save rate and every euthanized animals is included with their save rate calculation. That is why in 2019 Seacca killed an absolutely staggering 10,143 dogs and cats but only counts 19.
* Because Seaaca does not count the deaths of animals that become sick in its facility (they have an alarming rate of pneumonia cases), it has no motivation to provide adequate care to the animals there.
* Because Seaaca does not count deaths of un-weaned kittens, it has no motivation to develop a kitten foster program like other shelters.
* Because Seaaca does not count deaths of animals with behavioral notes, they have no motivation to help scared animals and every motivation to give bad behavior notes even where there is little to no basis for them. This sadly jeopardizes their ability to be rescued or adopted.
* Because Seaaca does not count the deaths of injured animals, it has no motivation to reach out to rescues to develop a Good Samaritan program which can provide assistance in obtaining immediate and critical vet care.
* Because Seaaca does not count deaths of feral cats it has no motivation to develop a trap and release program.
The track record of killing at SEAACA is appalling and unacceptable! There is a shocking number of adoptable animals, including, but not limited to young, calm, beautiful, and healthy dogs and cats, whose life was cut short at SEAACA while rescues were underway.
We, concerned citizens, will not stand idly by while animals are unlawfully killed behind closed doors. Please hold SEAACA accountable and make it perform its duties in a compassionate, competent and professional manner including but not limited to the following:
1) Publish TRUE statistics and stop eliminating sick, behavioral, feral or kittens from statistic. The public has a right to know the truth.
2) Provide proactive notices to rescues for any animals that are code red or approaching code red
3) Give a reasonable amount of time for the rescues to respond, or the owners to find their lost pet
4) Publicize and provide access to potential adopters for ALL animals. Do not lock up some in the backroom away from view and do not exclude them from your website.
5) Develop a foster program, including a kitten foster program and community outreach adoption events.
6) Develop an isolation ward to treat animals and contain illness to the population
7) Vet exams and treatment for sick animals.
We are asking them to stop the inhumanity and give these animals a chance to be rescued or find their owner.
