Inauguration Day 2021: Have an ASL Interpreter Present for Deaf/HoH Viewers

To so many of us, 2020 has been a year where we have happened upon clarity. It might not have been in a way we hoped, but it was in a way that we needed. We have seen the faults and flaws of our government, political figures, systems, agencies, and it is now that we begin to move towards ways of improving these problems to ensure a better future for us and the next generation, and to stand up and advocate for change.
For the Inauguration in 2021, I would like to propose that the federal government not only have an ASL interpreter present at the live event, but also provide televised coverage of the interpreter throughout the event on a portion of the screen for viewers at home. As a Deaf person, this new chapter should mark a time of inclusion and accessibility, not a further ceremony to show how divisive our country has really become.
Just like hearing people in this country who would rather hear and see the Inaugural Address than read the words being spoken, we would much rather feel the passion and emotions of this time through sign language.
Please join me in requesting that the White House and Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies provide an ASL Interpreter that can be viewed by all Deaf and Hard of Hearing people who want the opportunity to see such a historical moment for our nation.
