This petition is being sent to the world leaders of Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Brazil and USA. 

The COVID-19 pandemic is killing people in our own countries and around the world. However, for years, experts have been warning us of the risk of disease transmission from animals to humans.

From our places of lockdown, we, the representatives of animal rights parties throughout the world, are sending you this urgent, political message.

The present pandemic is depicted simply as originating from a single wild animal used for food in China. This is an incomplete picture: former epidemics have shown that the issue is our consumption not only of wild animals, but of animals in general.

The world has known other epidemics of animal origin such as SARS, MERS, pig flu, bird flu and mad cow disease. Three in four new human infectious diseases now come about because of our irresponsible interaction with and treatment of animals. We are paying a high price for eating animals, and the price paid by animals is even higher. 

Abused, genetically modified, exhibited, tightly packed, caged, fished, locked up, hunted, sold, slaughtered, killed by poachers, transported – animals are exploited to the point of unsustainability.

The related vested interests are supported by unscrupulous politicians and weak governments. Vast amounts of public funds are spent each year to promote this treatment of animals.

Meat and milk products increase the risk of chronic illnesses and some cancers. Farming animals for food is among the main causes of greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and soil and water pollution, leading to habitat destruction and extinction of wild species. Consumption of animals is pushing these problems to a point of crisis, as is the case at present. 

Our current food system is a ticking time bomb.

We must make a decisive and historic change of direction. 

We, the animal rights parties of the world, urge our governments to make immediate and radical changes. We urge governments to:

-Lead on the reduction of animal products now, aiming for a reduction of 70% by 2030

-Impose compulsory labelling on all animal products, indicating where the animals were raised, if they had free access to outdoors, were stunned before slaughter and including details of the product's ecological footprint

-Ban the consumption and trade of wild animals

-End the international transport of live animals

-Ban factory farming and industrial fishing

-Phase out subsidies for meat and dairy

-Provide a daily vegan menu option in canteens

-Help farmers make the transition to plant-based agriculture

Finally, we ask each of you to take action. We must reimagine our food system. If not for animals, change your eating habits for the sake of your children, your own health and that of the planet. Let’s make this world a better place for people and animals. Let’s start today! Thank you.

La pandémie de COVID-19 tue des personnes dans notre pays et le monde entier.

Cependant, depuis des années, les experts nous alertent sur le risque de transmission de maladie des animaux aux humains.

Depuis notre lieu de confinement, nous – les représentants des partis animalistes du monde – vous envoyons ce message urgent et politique.

La pandémie actuelle nous est dépeinte comme provenant d’un seul animal sauvage utilisé pour la nourriture en Chine. C’est une vue incomplète : les épidémies passées nous ont montré que le problème ne venait pas seulement de notre consommation d’animaux sauvages mais des animaux en général.

Le monde a connu d’autres épidémies d’origine animale, comme le SARS, le MERS, la grippe porcine, la grippe aviaire et la maladie de la vache folle. 3 sur 4 des maladies infectieuses humaines sont générées par notre interaction irresponsable avec les animaux et les traitements que nous leur infligeons. Nous payons un lourd tribut pour manger des animaux, et le prix payé par les animaux est encore bien plus élevé.

Violentés, génétiquement modifiés, exhibés, entassés, mis en cages, péchés, enfermés, chassés, vendus, abattus, braconnés, transportés - les animaux sont exploités jusqu'à l'insoutenable.

Les nombreux lobbyistes qui vivent de leur utilisation sont aidés par des politiciens peu scrupuleux, et des gouvernements complaisants. Des milliards d’euros d’argent public sont dépensés chaque année pour promouvoir ces traitements infligés aux animaux.

La viande et les produits laitiers augmentent le risque de développer des maladies chroniques et certains cancers. L’élevage est l’une des causes principales d’émissions de gaz à effet de serre, de déforestation et de pollution des eaux et des sols, provoquant une destruction de l’habitat des espèces sauvages et leur extinction. La consommation d’animaux peut nous conduire à des situations gravissimes, comme c’est le cas en ce moment.

Notre système alimentaire actuel est une bombe à retardement.

Nous devons prendre un virage décisif et historique. Nous, partis politiques animalistes du monde, exigeons de nos gouvernements des changements immédiats et radicaux.

Nous exigeons des gouvernements les mesures suivantes :

- démarrer une réduction immédiate de la consommation de produits animaux pour atteindre une réduction de 70% d’ici 2030 ;
- instaurer un étiquetage obligatoire sur tous les produits animaux, indiquant où les animaux ont été élevés, s’ils ont eu un accès libre à l’extérieur, ont été abattus avec ou sans insensibilisation préalable et mentionnant l’empreinte écologique des produits ;
- interdire la consommation et le commerce d’animaux sauvages ;
- mettre fin aux transports internationaux d’animaux vivants ;
- interdire l’élevage et la pêche intensifs ;
- arrêter de subventionner les secteurs de la viande et des produits laitiers ;
- instaurer une option végétalienne quotidienne dans la restauration publique ;
- aider les éleveurs à se réorienter vers une agriculture de cultures.

Enfin, nous demandons à chacun de vous d’agir. Nous devons reconstruire notre système alimentaire. Si vous ne changez pas vos habitudes alimentaires pour les animaux, faites-le pour vos enfants, votre santé et la planète. Faisons de ce monde un meilleur endroit pour les humains et les animaux.
