The Viking was a project eight years in the making.

In 1987, the initiative was launched by John Clarke, a former shop teacher at Burnaby North Secondary. His intention was to ignite inspiration and provide a challenging project for his welding students, while also creating an intimidating presence for opponents of the school's football team.

The viking mascot has played a significant role in representing Burnaby North Secondary's values of bravery, leadership, and sportsmanship. It has become an iconic symbol that embodies the spirit of Burnaby North Secondary and continues to ignite a sense of passion and enthusiasm among students, faculty, and alumni.
