Your support for accessible housing for all Australians has successfully led to the inclusion of mandatory minimum accessibility standards in the National Construction Code.
We need your help encouraging the final states NSW and WA governments to agree, by signing our WA and NSW petitions.
These last 2 states must commit to the Livable Housing Design ‘Silver’ Standard and improve the lives of people with disability and older Australians. Both the Disability Royal Commission and the NDIS Independent Review recommended they sign up as soon as possible.
The code specifies 7 minimum standards to ensure all new homes are accessible with modifications including step-free entrances and showers, and wider doors and corridors that can accommodate wheelchairs and walking aids.
Last week, our campaign was featured on ABC News and ABC Radio’s The World Today highlighting the Summer Foundation's latest research, which explores the views of building and design sector professionals when integrating accessible design standards into new housing.
The research found that the sector is optimistic about implementing accessible designs, and need practical support like training for builders and architects from peak representative bodies.
Every Australian deserves a home they can easily access, built to last a lifetime.
