Join Friends of the Headwaters: Tell DOJ Not to Support Tar Sands Pipelines in MN Water

The Issue

In Northern Minnesota, the Mississippi River begins its 2,552-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. Before it reaches its destination, the river provides fresh water, recreation and transportation to millions. Yet at the headwaters of this magnificent river, Enbridge is proposing to build a pipeline called “Line 3” that would carry millions of gallons of tar sands and risk massive environmental damage to this vulnerable ecosystem.

Friends of the Headwaters formed with a commitment to educate the public about the risks of the proposed pipelines across Northern Minnesota, including Line 3. Made up of local citizens, Friends of the Headwaters has gained state-wide support for its goal to raise awareness about Line 3 and the risks that it poses to clean water in Northern Minnesota.

Enbridge is a company with a checkered safety record. In 2010, a pipeline called Line 6b burst into the Kalamazoo River in Michigan. The pipeline continued to pump oil into the river for 17 hours while Enbridge employees failed to act, and even tried twice to restart the pipeline, ignoring the signs that the pipeline had burst. The pipeline spilled over one million gallons of oil into the river, and heavy rains carried the crude oil over 35 miles downstream. Over 300 local residents were sickened by the spill. Cleanup costs are estimated at $1.21 billion, and some areas of the Kalamazoo River will never be cleaned up.

Friends of the Headwaters is dismayed to learn that, as part of a proposed consent decree that is supposed to penalize Enbridge for the damage caused by the Kalamazoo River spill, the Department of Justice has ordered Enbridge to move ahead with the Line 3 replacement project. Line 3 has no connection to Line 6b, and there is no reason to include the Line 3 replacement project in this consent decree. Nor does it make any sense for the Department of Justice to require a company to build a new pipeline in an agreement that is supposed to penalize the company for its last pipeline-related disaster.

Please sign this petition and help protect the headwaters of the Mississippi River from Enbridge’s pipelines. Ask the Department of Justice not to support the Line 3 replacement project in its consent decree with Enbridge.
