"The house has already been burned down..." Historian Timothy Snyder

Historian Timothy Snyder spoke with former US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice in August 2026 at snyder.substack.com. Here’s what he said:

"I was in a conversation recently where the phrase came up about the (billionaires) who want to burn the house down, and I stopped and said, no, the house has already been burned down. People are wandering in the ashes, people are wandering in the ruins, and people are pretending the house is still standing. But the house was never quite what many of us thought it was, and now it is gone. So the question is: who has the vision, what can we do, and where do we start?"
