Domestic violence occurs everyday in the lives of those in need of someone looking out for them and showing compassion to their situation. It is "up to us to listen" to these victims, assess their problem, and help prevent it any way we can. These people DESERVE for their human dignity to be RESPECTED. Our state's lack of accountability regarding these rape kits gives our community a sense that they don't matter. Such legislation would ensure the counting, tracking and timely testing of every kit booked into evidence and connected with a reported rape. Our law enforcement agencies must commit to investigating rape cases thoroughly and moving more cases forward to prosecution. This critical investment will save lives, prevent suffering and make our communities safer.Martin Luther King once said that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." Passing this legislation can help to improve our communities by ensuring that people who have been abused or sexually assaulted get the chance to have that critical investigation done for them preventing further instances from happening. We must fight for justice for these victims because domestic violence can generate an environment in the home which ultimately gives children this idea that violence is sometimes necessary. Martin Luther King himself advocated for nonviolent resistance, and this legislation can help prevent the continuum of these crimes. Violence is in no way ever the answer, and helping pass a small legislation such as this can create a domino effect of justice for our communities.
