This year's Larchmont Family Fair will again be featuring camel rides, pony rides and a petting zoo.  These animal exhibits are disturbing for the following reasons: (i) most of these animal exhibitors are unlicensed by the USDA as required by law; (ii) by the USDA's own admission, those that are licensed are infrequently and inadequately inspected; (iii) most of the animals spend long hours being transported and/or confined under unpleasant conditions, to say the least; (iv) most of their "working hours" are spent walking in circles on asphalt and deprived of adequate food, water and shade; (v) most of the animals will be slaughtered when they no longer can turn a profit for the business owners; (vii) petting zoos are a hotbed of E. coli and have been responsible for dozens of outbreaks in the last few years alone; (viii) there are plenty of humane alternatives (e.g., pet adoptions); and, most importantly, (ix) using animals solely for entertainment and profit at the expense of their welfare is gross exploitation.  If you believe that we, as a progressive and humane society, should not tolerate these exhibits, please sign this petition and demand that the Larchmont Boulevard Association cancel any and all exhibits involving live animals for entertainment purposes.
