Women’s Own Withdrawal Management Centre is the only detox centre in the City of Toronto that is specifically for female-identified individuals. For women, this is a staple for recovering addicts, alcoholics and people who use drugs.

Over the pandemic, overdose rates have skyrocketed as never seen before. According to an article published by the Canadian Women's Health Network in the spring/summer of 2008, "Women of all ages become addicted to both prescription and illegal drugs more quickly than men, and suffer greater physical, psychological and social consequences."

There is already a huge disparity in resources for women experiencing homelessness, addiction and trauma. Women’s own provides a safe and supportive environment and is often a stepping stone in a woman’s journey of healing and recovery.

By removing this vital service, women who may not have access to specialized healthcare services, specifically marginalized women, will find that services available to others are inaccessible to them. This puts a greater strain on an already broken and underfunded system.
