Hello, my name is Jasmine. I am currently working on my Active Citizenship project along with my peers Indra, Cerys and Amelie. We have chosen to promote voting being a legal requirement because we feel that voting plays an essential role in being a democratic society and would increase the voting turnout. 

Increasing the voting turnout would ensure that all of our voices are equally reflected in our government. For example in the 2017 General Election the voting turnout for the UK was a mere 68.7%, giving a non-proportional representation of our society.

Additionally, one of the main reasons people don't vote other than laziness is that they don't believe that one party accurately represents their views. However, there are over 15 major parties in the UK, which subsequently means that there would be one party that shares their ideals with you. Also by making it a legal requirement the smaller parties will potentially get more of a say in parliament, and your vote doesn't get wasted. 

Throghout history people have risked their lives to ensure a fairer and more democratic society, to give us the most basic human right of voting. So why is it fair that some people choose to waste this opportunity to make a change?
