We want John Oliver coverage of Overton Park's Greensward and the Memphis Zoo land grab.
The Issue
We are petitioning for John Oliver to provide coverage on his HBO show for the story in its entirety of the mission creep parking situation on historic Overton Park's Greensward and subsequent land grab by the Memphis Zoological Society (MZS); the politics of how the Memphis City Council violated sunshine laws and gave majority of the Overton Park land to MZS when it had no authority to do so; political contributions to city officials by zoo board and management; the city's overbearing response to intimidate legal protestors costing the city approximately $38k when the city does not have expendable funds and diverted them from other legitimate uses; the multiple front efforts made by Overton Park supporters to save the Greensward, Old Growth Forest and Overton Park; why Overton Park is historic, why the SCOTUS ruling matters and how it changed interstate planning thus saving other parks; the multiple lawsuits filed by all parties involved, the neighboring Evergreen Historic District and other Memphis citizens; the RIDICULOUSNESS of city leaders attempting to package charging $5 for parking on the Greensward as a racial issue when surrounding neighborhood parking availibility is free; the history of MZS not abiding by previous agreements and if Memphians should have any faith they would honor any "agreements" as a result of a mediation process; and explanation of why MZS won't open its books, who manages and pays for upkeep and MZS salaries and how are Greensward parking fees accounted for that money isn't skimmed; why $19 million has been spent over the last decade on new exhibits/improvements but $0 has been used or planned use for a parking solutions; who initiated "BannerGate" as an intimidation tactic of citizens' 1st Amemdment rights and lastly why illegal tree removal and other planning activity takes place under the cover of night or early morning.
John Oliver has a talent of illustrating the absurdity of situations in their entirety. Mr. Oliver, won't you help us once more save Overton Park and the Greensward as it was designed to be used over a century ago?
Thank you for caring and signing.
