British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest has been dubbed one of the wildest places left on earth. It is home to rivers, lakes, mountains, valleys, ancient forests and of course, BC’s massive costal temperate rainforest and it is the largest of its kind in the world. With a variation of species such as wolves, cougars, birds, fish, deer, elk, Orcas, whales, and the most famous of them all, the Spirit Bear, “the rarest bear in the world.
At this moment the BC government is trying to punch a massive natural gas pipeline right into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest with its end destination being the costal town of Kitimat, where the gas will be processed and turned to liquid form, then shipped over seas. To ship this gas over seas you need massive tanker ships and tanker activity is expected to rise by 350% of what it is now. For these tankers to get to Kitimat they must make sharp turns in an effort to travers the hundreds of rocky islands in the Great Bear Rainforest, heavily increasing the chance of a catastrophic fuel spill. While the LNG gas will not pollute the waters, it will vaporize and release copious amounts of methane gas, this gas has 25 times the global warming effect than Co2. The tankers must also go right through “Whale Pass”, a long channel where hundreds of Finn whales spend there time, there for inevitably striking and killing them.
As you can see, the Great Bear Rainforest of Coastal British Columbia is a place that most people could only fantasize about. We need to stop the LNG Natural Gas Pipeline from reaching Kitimat, it is time to save one of the natural wonders of the world. Now we need to unite, find a protest, contact leaders, and first sign this petition, because we need to save British Columbia from making a big mistake.
