BC Government Is Taking Us Back To The Days of Prohibition

In spite of international agreements for tax-free trade Province of British Columbia, Canada, runs the world's worst monopoly for distribution of alcoholic beverages including wine and beer. In 2014 British Columbia already had some of the highest prices in North America, about 80-percent of the retail price consisting of tax including provincial and federal sales taxes.

In 2014 the provincial government came up with a deceptive scheme to hide price increases by taking out the federal and provincial taxes out of base price to be charged at the till to give the impression of a price reduction. Sure enough, consumers were duped until the government started to increase base prices gradually until consumers found themselves paying substantially more than before at the till.

Opposition NDP party accused the Liberal government of underhanded tax increase on alcoholic beverages. When they came to power, however, they slapped the worst price increases ever by taxing the taxes. Since 2014 wine prices have been increased by up to 100-percent or even more. No need to mention other products selling at the government monopoly stores. Private wine and beer shops are not allowed to compete with the government, having to charge the government profit before adding their own markups.

This is the worst monopoly of its kind designed to gouge consumers to the hilt.
