Appoint Lana Popham Minister of Agriculture

Lana Popham has served as the MLA for Saanich South and Opposition Critic for Agriculture for the past 8 years. She grew up in an agricultural setting on Quadra Island where growing food, raising animals and harvesting from the sea was her way of life.
Once leaving Quadra, Lana gained an extensive background in agriculture. She co-founded and operated Barking Dog Vineyard, the first organic vineyard on Vancouver Island. Along with this, she managed a crew of vineyard workers who took care of many vineyards on the Saanich Peninsula. She also served as President of the Vancouver Island Grape Growers association and was involved in the Organic Producers Association.
In 2009, Lana entered BC politics and was elected MLA for Saanich South. Soon after she was appointed Opposition Critic for Agriculture and, with this position, continued to work for the betterment of agriculture in BC. She travelled across the province to meet with farmers, agricultural associations, and food advocacy groups. Through her travels she gained the experience and knowledge to champion numerous agricultural initiatives such as the Buy BC program, improvements to meat regulations, and increased institutional procurement of local food. Additionally, Lana has served as Chair for the Opposition Standing Committee for Agriculture and Food, which sought to bring values, ideas and concerns of farmers directly to the BC Legislature.
Lana has worked tirelessly for BC’s agriculture sector. With her exceptional background and passion in agriculture, it simply makes sense for Lana to sit as our Minister of Agriculture. We, the signers of this petition, call on John Horgan to appoint Lana Popham as Minister of Agriculture upon forming government.
