Justice For Saman the Gravely ill Elephant at Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage

Saman is an approximately 55-year-old bull elephant. Saman’s life has been one of torture and abuse as he refused to submit to human slavery and wished to remain wild and be free!
Due to his lifetime of suffering he has killed 5 mahouts the last one being in early  2018.
In April 2018 he was transferred to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in a pretty bad way following yet more beatings, the vets at Pinnawala saved him, his condition continued to improve, we know from a witness that in January 2019 he was almost completely recovered and looking well.
We also know that in the last few weeks he has been in Musth
On Sept 10th a report was carried by Ada Derana showing Saman in a terrible state, unable to stand and having wounds on his back and a horrific looking injury to his tail which appears to be all but gone!

What has happened to Saman?
So far Pinnawala have said
“As a result of old age, its teeth were worn off and couldn’t digest food properly. Due to its peakedness it couldn’t walk and lost its balance due to legs injuries.”
We have also heard they have claimed his condition is due to chronic Arthritis!
Neither of these seem plausible!
Given that there are many accounts of the Pinnawala mahouts using brutality against elephants we are very concerned!

We Want to know the truth behind what happened to Saman and to this end we call on the Sri Lanka Minister for Tourism and Wildlife John Amaratunga to instigate a high level independent investigation into Samans injuries and following this to hold individuals to account where necessary!
