We are petitioning our schools, city and local government to install speed bumps in front of the schools and flashing stop signs/lights at & around every intersection/school zone in Dearborn Heights, MI. On Friday, October 14, 2022 Joseph Smith or “Joey” as he is affectionately known as was going back up to Charlie Chircop Field on Annapolis to help a friend retrieve a lost cellphone. At or around 10:25pm after the high school football game he was struck by a vehicle at the corner of Pardee and Annapolis. Sadly later that night Joey succumbed to his injuries. For years reckless driving has been a problem on Annapolis and other streets in this neighborhood where children live, play and walk to/from school. Joey was hit in front of an elementary school and passed away just a block from the middle school he attended himself. Speed bumps and flashing stop lights will force the drivers in the area to slow down and pay more attention to their surroundings. It will also make the pedestrians more aware of their surroundings as well. These preventive measures can help greatly reduce the risk of another tragedy happening in our community. Our children deserve to be better protected. Our future shouldn't be put at risk any longer when there's ways to prevent it.
