We would ask that its prohibition be suspended, and if possible Completely abolished. And that marijuana be treated, and taxed like alcohol.

The Issue

We the people object to its prohibition on the grounds that decades of failure Has shown us that the fight against the law of supply, and demand is futile, And the millions of taxpayer dollars wasted each year prosecuting non-violent Marijuana offenders.  Some cases ruining the offender’s life with a felony drug Charge.  This is nothing more than persecution of our own countrymen and women. Ruining careers, an ambitions which undermines the economy, and progress of this great states people.

One of the harms imposed by illegal drug use is the cost of dealing with it through the criminal justice system. The time of police officers, lawyers and courts, plus the cost of imprisoning drug offenders. in an overcrowded prison system, can represent a significant proportion of the cost to the taxpayer that arises from the war on drugs.

By legalizing marijuana in the state of West Virginal we can cut millions annually from our budget dedicated to criminal marijuana law enforcement. At a time of economic hardship this makes fiscal sense. It also makes moral sense that a majority of all arrests made in our state are related to non-violent possession, cultivation or sale of marijuana.

It seems logical to me, that in a time in this region a lot of our people, when overwhelming majority of West virgin’s support its legalization.that those employed in the coal industry will soon face a vast unemployment crisis. The jobs that are lost with the decline of fossil fuels, the crisis that the people of this region face must be meet with creative solutions, such as natural gas, off shore drilling, and the industry that would build up around marijuana, these are all examples of industry which could help elevate the coming unemployment in the coal industry.

By legalizing, regulating, and taxing marijuana we can bring in revenues that would allow us to invest in education, health care and other vital programs that we at this time simply can't afford. And ensure that West Virginia's debt will be dramatically lowered and potentially eliminated over time.
