#JoeMustGo - The People's Attorney Bexar County DA Joe Gonzales must RESIGN!

The Issue

#JoeMustGo -The people of San Antonio & Bexar County are demanding for the People's Attorney of Bexar County District Attorney, Joe Gonzales to RESIGN because he refuses to present evidence that proves to convict policeman that have lied on police reports and have killed innocent Black people.    Joe Gonzales will not talk to the people who put him in office when he discovers they want him to present new evidence. He is biased for the police officer's union and the police department.    During his campaign, Gonzales took police union money and a billionaire's contribution over a million dollars which places his loyalty to his rich donors and not the people of Bexar County who he is charged to serve.   He protects the police by not presenting key witnesses and withholding key scientific evidence. In the alarming case of Marquise Jones, African-American male, was shot in the back in cold blood nearly hundred feet from an off duty police officer, because the officer thought he had a gun.  The officer had a long history of disciplinary actions that left him working moonlight jobs at restaurants. In this case, after the City of San Antonio Mayor discovered the gun that the Jones family says was placed on Marquise by the police officer, two years after the grand jury trial, ordered the gun "found" at the crime scene, to be sent to the lab for forensics test.  Not surprising to the family, as they proclaimed the innocence of Marquise Jones, the gun came back to the City of San Antonio with NO DNA and NO Fingerprints attached to Marquise Jones which countered the narrative of Police Officer Encina.   The District Attorney's Office, that has backed the Police officer, says the fact that there was not Blood DNA of Jones or Fingerprints of Jones doesn't mean anything. As of June 10, 2020, the DA's office states this critical evidence is not relevant to present to a new grand jury.  As you ask Joe, why did the City of San Antonio spend thousands of tax payer dollars to have forensics done IF the results would be thrown in the garbage by the DA?   This cash rich DA is out of touch with Bexar County voters and taxpayers who want a law abiding District Attorney.

Local nonprofit presidents, said Joe, on the campaign trail, repeatedly promised he would reopen and review several criminal cases regarding allegations of police brutality, reckless police shootings, tasing and the deaths of young Hispanic & Black men that were killed in police custody. The DA has been protested in Bexar County during the #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd worldwide rallies showing how police cover-ups are routine in the criminal justice system.

DA Gonzales continues to disparage the victim's families in speeches, attributing gun possession to the victims while refusing to acknowledge the forensic evidence in these cases, that show no DNA or fingerprints of young men murdered in police custody. Families of the victims have repeatedly asked for meetings with the DA that he has refused to honor. The DA refuses to review, reopen and present new evidence (from wrongful death civil cases) and forensic reports that has never been presented to a grand jury.

Although the family has met with Mayor Ron Nirenberg, Gonzales has refused to do the same. Debbie Banks, Aunt of Marquise Jones of the Mayor, he was the first elected official to meet with her family since the wrongful death occurred six years ago. “I am tired of begging and pleading for the people's attorney to work for the family and not the police." Several nonprofit community organizations are disappointed as they remember the promises of the DA. “DA Gonzales is the one million dollar man. He is bought and paid for. He works for the his campaign contributors and police-not for the people”, said one community leader.

New Information: In the case of Marquise Jones, the former Mayor, Ivy Taylor ordered a ballistic test of the gun attributed by the DA to Jones. The results revealed NO DNA / NO Fingerprints. Where did the "old rusty gun" come from? Jones' attorney asked.

New Information: The DA never reviewed the transcript of the deposition of James Brantley who was a witness within 25 feet of the incident. He said he saw the whole thing.

New Information: The DA called one of the female witnesses a liar. Refused to accept her eyewitness account.

New Information: The DA never reviewed the Civil case which supported Officer Encina was not threatened by Jones. The Civil case supported over 5 witnesses said Jones did not have a gun.

In the sworn testimony of the civil case, Officer Encina changed his statement, "I saw a gun" to "I thought Jones had a gun". Why Officer Encina shot Jones was asked in the civil case. Enicina said he "I don't know." This is all new evidence that the People's Attorney has refused to take to a grand jury.

Summary: While Jones was leaving the scene, Officer Encina launched 8 shots into the access road on I-410 traffic with 2 bullets hitting Jones in the back, killing him. Encina endangered the public with his shooting.

SADP Officer Enrique Encina has never been filed with any charges over 6 years. He shot 8 bullets into traffic with no accountability. It is our belief he is responsible for the wrongful death of Marquise Jones. He has worked as a Police officer in another city since killing Jones. The DA has access to the new evidence, but he chooses not to reopen the case.

Similarly in another case, Oct. 17, 2018, Officer Steve Casanova fired shots on an unarmed suspect, and killed an innocent by-stander 18 year Black male, Charles Roundtree, Jr. New Information and evidence shows Charles Roundtree, Jr. did not have any gun at the residence and No DNA was attached to his good name despite the DA holding onto the claim the officer saw a gun. Officer Casanova story was found to be baseless as the suspect in his case whose trial was held in the 399th state District Court, was found “not guilty” on the felon in possession of a firearm. The officer is not entitled to use self-defense as a claim moving forward since it was proven there was no gun in the case. This is the new evidence the family has begged and pleaded for the people's attorney to bring forth to a grand jury. The DA continues to infer in speeches that there was a gun involved justifying there is no wrongful death. The officer used a regular warrant and entered the house without knocking or announcing he was the police and immediately fired upon the suspect, injuring him, and killing innocent bystander Charles Roundtree, Jr.

The last case of dereliction of duty is the Norman Cooper case where two officer entered the Cooper residence and two officer's tased the young Black male to death while his parents witnessed it. Norman Coopers case is now being heard at the US Supreme Court BECAUSE our local DA failed to bring justice to the Cooper family.
