This petition is intended to bring the creation of the "Barnwell Landmark District" to a voter referendum. If the majority of community residents supports this initiative, it will ultimately result in a proposed amendment to the Consutition of Alabama of 1901 as it relates to Baldwin County. The amendment will, among other things, define the boundaries of the "Barnwell Landmark District" within Baldwin County and prohibit the annexation by the local law of any property within the district into any municipality. 

Current Alabama law allows a city the ability to annex any part or all of surrounding areas without the input or approval of the residents. Creation of the "Barnwell Landmark District" will ensure that the citizens of Barnwell will have the right to input and the right to vote on whether they wish to be annexed.

As well defined municipalities begin to grow and sprawl, unique communities such as Barnwell are being incorporated and this wealth of heritage, tradition and culture is lost. Precedence has been set with the advent of other Landmark Districts and allowed similar communities the ability to take a better "hand" in directing its future and destiny.
