Withdraw Indiana police forces from North Dakota
The Issue
We are asking that any and all law enforcement officers and equipment on behalf of the state or communities of Indiana be withdrawn from the current situation in Morton County North Dakota concerning the protest around the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Indiana has responded to the EMAC (Emergency Management Assistance Compact) put fourth by the Morton County Sheriffs Department requesting assistance in the policing of the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Indiana has responded by sending equipment and personnel from the Michigan City, and Schererville PD. With the Morton County Sheriffs Department currently being looked into by the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) for use of excessive force, denying Indigenous people's right to pray, escalation of tension through police militarization, unlawful arrests, unlawful practices of apprehension and the many claims of police protecting corporate interests, as the pipeline is neither a state, or federal project but a private one. It is clear that given the controversy surrounding this situation that it is not in the best interests of Indiana or its citizens to send our law enforcement officers to North Dakota to protect a private pipeline. Until the practices of this situation greatly improve, and become completely transparent we request that all our states resources be withdrawn. It is not worth putting our officers at risk for any investigations for misconduct and it is not worth robbing our own citizens from the resources that have been sent, here at home.
Thank you and we hope that you make the right decision and withdraw Indiana from North Dakota.
