Stop the "Vicious Dog Ban" Ordinance in Homer Glen

The Issue

Our town is trying to pass an ordinance to ban "vicious dogs". Ordinance's like this can LEAD to breed bans and can be the start of breed discrimination. I understand the fear of certain aggressive dogs that are in the hands of an irresponsible owner. However, a vicious dog ban isn't the way to do it. What about an irresponsible owner law? Place ordinances against the owner. Fine him. Place stipulations that force him to take the dog to training, stricter leash laws, etc... To insure that the town is bettering the canine community, educate about dog body language and how to work with an animal, encourage people to take their dogs to behavior classes and protective measures for recognized aggressors. Whatever it takes. But who is to say what dog is vicious and isn't? All dogs have the potential to be vicious, does this mean Homer Glen will be dogless? The power to decide what dog is and isn't vicious is extremely abused and opens a door to breed discrimination.

Please sign this petition to put a stop to this ordinance that has the potential to do more harm then good. There are other options that can be considered!

Responded
THIS IS NOT AN ORDINANCE TO STOP ANYONE FROM HAVING ANY DOG THEY WOULD LIKE TO OWN. THIS WILL BE AN ORDINANCE TO HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO CONTROL AN INDIVIDUAL DOG THAT WAS DEEMED VISCOUS OR DANGEROUS BY THE WILL COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL. WE CANNOT LET ANYONES DOG BITE OR HARM ANY OTHER PERSON OR PET THAT DID NOT PROVOKE OR ATTACK FIRST.
