Why this petition matters

Started by Ryan Witter

After closing temporarily for renovations in February 2020, it was announced in May 2020 that Cinerama would be “closed for the foreseeable future” due to the economic impact of Covid-19. The public has been given no updates on the landmark theater’s future since then. So it’s time for us to fight to save Cinerama!

Cinerama has been a Seattle institution for over half a century and has offered the city’s most uniquely great movie theater experience since it’s inception. As of today, it is one of just three remaining theaters in the world, and one of two in the United States, capable of showing three-panel Cinerama films. With LA’s Cinerama Dome currently out of use and facing an uncertain future as well, it is all the more urgent that Seattle Cinerama is saved to ensure the preservation of this great film tradition!

By signing this petition you will be calling on 1) Jody Allen, the current head of the Paul Allen Estate (which owns the theater), to invest in this historic theater’s future and get it back up and running; and 2) the Seattle Neighborhoods Department Historic Preservation Program to designate the theater a Seattle Landmark, thereby protecting it from demolition.
