Dear Joanna Cherry MP

We, the constituents of Edinburgh South West, ask you to unequivocally and publicly oppose the development of the Rosebank Oil Field by Equinor.

Research shows that new oil and gas is not an option if we are to secure a safe future for the planet. We note that you have never taken a clear stance on this issue. We ask you to do so now.

We call on you to listen to the research and to speak up loudly and openly against Rosebank, Equinor and the UK government’s plans to continue approving fossil fuel projects.

As residents of Edinburgh, we want to keep ourselves, our families and our neighbours safe from climate chaos. We want to heat and illuminate our homes with clean, affordable energy, free from the volatility of oil and gas markets. We want those working in the fossil fuel industry to receive support to find safe, well-paid work in new areas. We want the country we live in to stop contributing to the huge destruction already occurring around the world as a result of climate change.

None of this will be achieved if the UK Government continues to approve new oil and gas projects. As our Member of Parliament, we ask you to speak up on our behalf and to say no to new fossil fuels.

The development of the Rosebank oil field is currently delayed because the environmental regulator OPRED has raised concerns regarding Equinor’s environmental claims about the project. Now is the time to echo those concerns by loudly and clearly opposing its development. Please help us by speaking up with us.

If you are not willing to speak out against Rosebank, please make a statement giving reasons for your decision.
