Keep the grandstands and the track at the NYS fairgrounds intact for the historic Super Dirt Week to remain the Empire State's largest racing event.
The Issue
The Moody Mile is historic. It was the "centerpiece" of the fair, and the fair grew around the track. A century of racing, whether it be the power of harnessed horses, or horses under the hood. The grandstands were built for all of the spectators of the races. This is the intended use of these grandstands; racing! Yes it is a fact that the fair does need a better suitable place for concerts which the amphitheater will be a perfectly fitting setting for fair-goers. The new addition of the amphitheater will generate profit undoubtedly, and it has the possibility of being able to be used all year round for many concerts, shows, etc. New York State has shown that it has the funds to improve and maintain its major summer attraction known as the fair with the proposal of this project. Tearing down the grandstands and tearing up the track tears the heart and soul out of racing in New York, and also leaves dirt racing without its premier event of the season, one that can't be replaced. There is no track or facility that comes close to being able to measure up to the Moody Mile, resulting in the fact that Super Dirt Week is irreplaceable. There is nowhere near enough funding in all of dirt racing in the northeast to build another track as grand as our beloved mile. The tradition has been passed down through generations in many families of attending the races and partaking in the races themselves. People do not like change, and this change is being forced upon all of central New York. Keeping the track and grandstands honors all of the people that travel and have traveled to Syracuse to witness the thundering of the horses around that track. Tens of thousands of people consistently every year dating back over four decades just for Super Dirt Week. Syracuse needs the track, Central New York needs the track, racing needs the track, and most importantly, the fans need the track.
