Urge Wegmans Food Markets to stop the use of palm oil in its products
The Issue
Palm oil is primarily cultivated in an unsustainable way in Indonesia and Malaysia, and other parts of the world. Unsustainable cultivation of palm oil is creating palm oil plantations that are leading to deforestation resulting in devastating effects on the environment, indigenous communities, and wildlife, particularly Orangutans, one of the great apes. Presently Indonesia is experiencing one of the world's worst man made disasters as a result of fires being set to deliberately burn the land to clear it for palm oil and paper products.
In 1974 I studied mountain gorillas with Dian Fossey at Karisoke Research Center. I came to have an even greater understanding of the great apes and how fragile their existence is as well as how dependent it is on the habitat.
Their are many alternatives to palm oil that can be used in products. Urge Wegmans to use these alternatives and help stop the destruction of the Orangutan habitat.
Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a privately held U.S. regional supermarket chain headquartered in Gates, New York, near Rochester. Wegmans has 85 stores in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions, in NewYork, Pennsylvania, Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. Founded in 1916 in Rochester, Wegmans has appeared on Fortune's annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list since the list first appeared in 1998, and has ranked among the top 10 for eight consecutive years. Food Network recognized it with its award for Best Grocery Store in 2007, and Consumer Reports ranked it the top large U.S. grocery chain in 2012 and in 2014. It was also profiled as part of "Here Are The Jobs" segment on MSNBC's Politics Nation on July 6, 2012. (Source Wikipedia)
