No homeless shelter in Waianae

No homeless shelter in Waianae
The Issue
Hawaii has more homeless than any small cities in the United States according to a recent news article posted by Hawaii News Now. According to a U.S. Housing and Urban Development reported that Hawaii, has more than 4900 recorded homeless and shows the severity of lack of affordable housing for our local community members. For a three bedroom, one bath apartment not including utilities and maintenance fees the cost of a condo in Pearl City sells for $367,000 and up. However, in October 2015 the average median home costs $720,000 and a condo sells for $370,000 according to HI Central. While the cost to rent a three bedroom, one bathroom apartment in Waipahu costs $1500+ per month. With the high cost of importation of our goods and less exportation, Hawaii can expect the cost of living to rise in the near future. So where does this leave our families who struggle with minimum wage jobs, trying to support their families? Out on the street, in bushes utilizing what resources are available to them. What do our politicians do, is sweep the streets of Kakaako and soon the bushes of Waianae. Where are our house less families to go? They will move from one location to another until the State and City leaves them alone. What this petition is for:
1. To keep our Waianae homeless community in tact
2. To provide increased resources that they are in need of
3. Provide a set location for the homeless community that the State and City will be the caretakers of
Homelessness will not go away, if wages do not meet the needs of daily living. Therefore, create a camp designated location using public land that will be maintained by public service departments that are added to the general fund and allocated towards these projects.
