“Jharkhand Deserves Safe Water — End the Radioactive Pollution NOW!”

The Issue

“Imagine waking up every day knowing your drinking water might give you cancer.”

Having roots in Jharkhand, with my mother hailing from this vibrant and culturally rich state, the issue of radioactive water contamination is not just news to me — it’s personal. Families in Jaduguda and the surrounding villages are living under the shadow of invisible but deadly radiation, which has quietly been poisoning their water, land, and lives for decades. This isn’t just an environmental issue — it’s a human rights crisis.

For over 50 years, the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) has operated uranium mines in Jaduguda. While these mines supply uranium for India's nuclear energy and weapons programs, they have left a horrifying legacy behind — radioactive waste dumped in open tailing ponds, leaking pipelines, and unsafe disposal practices, contaminating soil and seeping into the Subarnarekha River and local water sources.

💔 The Human Cost
Generations of villagers have reported:

A rise in cancer, infertility, miscarriages, birth defects, and chronic illnesses
Deformities in children and premature deaths in families
Mental health trauma from living in constant fear of disease and death
These are not isolated incidents — multiple scientific and medical studies have confirmed that radiation levels in Jaduguda exceed international safety limits. Yet, affected communities are denied basic information, medical aid, or even acknowledgment from authorities. Children play near toxic waste. Families drink and bathe in poisoned water. Entire communities are being slowly destroyed — and no one is being held accountable.

🌍 Environmental Devastation
Leaking radioactive tailing ponds contaminate fields and water bodies used for farming and daily life.
Heavy metals and radioactive elements like uranium, thorium, and radium have entered groundwater and the food chain.
Rainfall causes overflow from waste ponds, turning every monsoon into a radiation risk.
Despite repeated complaints and evidence, UCIL and government agencies have failed to take sufficient, science-based action to contain the contamination, decontaminate water sources, or treat affected people.

🛑 We Demand Change – Now
We, as citizens of India and concerned human beings, demand the following immediate actions from:
UCIL, Department of Atomic Energy, Ministry of Environment, and the Government of Jharkhand:

✅ CLEAN-UP & CONTAINMENT
Immediate sealing of leaking tailings ponds and uranium waste sites
Deployment of safe waste disposal systems using global best practices and technologies
Restoration of contaminated rivers and water bodies like the Subarnarekha
✅ HEALTHCARE FOR AFFECTED COMMUNITIES
Free medical screening and treatment for all radiation-exposed families
Mobile health units and permanent clinics in affected areas
Compensation and rehabilitation for families with cancer, birth defects, and chronic illnesses
✅ SAFE WATER ACCESS
Free, clean drinking water supply via deep borewells, tankers, or filtration plants
Regular independent water testing with public reporting
✅ ACCOUNTABILITY & TRANSPARENCY
An independent investigation into UCIL’s practices
Public disclosure of radiation levels and health risks
Stricter environmental laws for nuclear mining in populated areas
✅ AWARENESS & PROTECTION
Community education programs on radiation risks and safety measures
Protective infrastructure in schools, homes, and farming areas

This fight isn’t just for Jaduguda — it’s for every marginalized voice that has been silenced by industries putting profit over people. The residents of Jharkhand are resilient, but they deserve protection, justice, and the basic human right to clean water and health.

🧠 “If we don’t act now, more lives will be destroyed.”
Help us bring justice, safety, and dignity to the people of Jaduguda. Sign and share this petition. Let’s pressure the government to put people before uranium. Let’s fight for a Jharkhand where children are born healthy, where families can drink water without fear, and where no one has to suffer silently because of radioactive neglect.

Because no one should die for powering a nation.
