NO to ROAD WIDENING & DEMOLITION of OLD HOUSES OF JUBAN, SORSOGON!

BACKGROUND

The Old Houses of Juban are one of the tourist attractions and heritage sites of the Province of Sorsogon. Located in the idyllic town of Juban, Sorsogon, these famous Old Houses were known to have been built in 1898 during the Spanish period.

The houses are built of solid hardwoods and stones ("Bahay na Bato") showcasing the old Spanish architectural designs. The pre-Spanish windows and designs made of capiz shells and solid hardwood materials are also featured on each of the houses lining the Maharlika Highway in the town proper of Juban.

The Old Houses are maintained through the years and have even outlived World War II and several natural calamities (typhoons, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes) that hit the town of Juban. It showed the town's resiliency and rich historical and cultural heritage that warrants preservation in this modern age. Some of the Old Houses were already lost or destroyed in the past due to natural calamities, old age or sold to antique dealers/house restorers based in Manila.

This is one of the treasures that our town, in particular, and our country in general should really take care of because of its rich historical and cultural values. The town of Juban is an ideal place to spend your well-deserved vacation, relax and even enjoy retirement. It is an idyllic place where one could reminisce the past.

ROAD WIDENING PROJECT

The Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH) in partnership with the Provincial Government of Sorsogon is embarking on a road widening project that covers the whole stretch of Maharlika Highway under the Build, Build, Build program of the government. The road widening project is envisioned to address the growing demand of vehicular traffic for travellers and/or truckers passing thru the Province of Sorsogon enroute to Visayas and even Mindanao via the Maharlika Highway road network. This is already the 3rd time that the DPWH has made road widening in the town of Juban.

REASON FOR OPPOSING THE PROJECT

1. Heritage - demolishing the Old Houses to give way to widened roads in the name of progress will practically erase the rich historical and cultural heritage sites of the town of Juban. These Old Houses are considered priceless gems that can never be replaced by road widening and progress.

2. Tourism - the Old Houses of Juban is one of the well known tourist attractions in the Province of Juban and tourism has become a steady source of livelihood and business pre-occupation of its constituents.

3. Safety -  widening of roads to give way to a high-speed expressway along the busy thoroughfare and town proper of Juban is no longer safe. Houses lining the town proper (Poblacion) are mostly residential and now lodging inns catering to tourists. High speed and loaded buses and trucks passing thru the town proper can best be diverted to a by-pass road where they may freely move at a faster and safer pace enroute to its final destination either Visayas or Mindanao.

SUGGESTED SOLUTION

The suggested solution is to provide a BY-PASS ROAD a few kilometers before the town proper of Juban and exiting to about 10 kilometers away from the Poblacion. The proposed site of the diversion road is presently idle and unproductive vast tracts of land that can be acquired by the government at a minimal cost rather than demolish the Old Houses along the Maharlika Highway in the town proper of Juban. This can be more economical, practical and safer alternative to the Road Widening plan which is rather short term, and costly solution of the DPWH.
