I was a student at jfk school and i noticed a flaw in their uniform policies. If you did not know already girls cannot wear trousers. I hardly need to spell out why for a public school in 2016 this should not be accepted, when ashylns, hemel, tring etc do not conform to this sexist and out dated policy. Lets face it, we wouldnt create separate uniform policies for different religions or race. After a petition from the students of over 220signitures i am simply being ignored by the governors. I quote - ' I am intrigued as to why you waited so long to bring up the matter of the uniform; the opportunity to discuss it face to face has been lost and I feel your right to object is also questionable now that you are no longer a student at the school.' This process has been stalled so long i have now left, and suddenly my view is not valid. This is not good enough. The main argument against me is that 'it makes the school distinctive' although sadly for the wrong reasons. Jfk is a brilliant school and i am only asking that girls should have the option of black trousers like the boys. A gender equal uniform policy is not about the fact that girls should have the same opportunities as their fellow male students. It is actually more important because it is a message that a school is promoting to its young and impressionable students. A good example is when gaining the 220 signitures from the students themselves for a petition (that incidentally has been ignored) a young boy would not allow his friends to sign, despite the others boys clearly wanting too. I asked him why he didnt want to sign it, i will cut out the foul language but the main gist was that he genuinely didnt think girls deserved to wear trousers. He was 12/13 years old. This is disgraceful. So spend a second signing this and although there is a good chance this problem will still be ignored, there is a small chance we can still make some change for the better.
