"We're responding to considerable consumer concern..." – Malcolm Turnbull on ABC News today acting on our campaign.
Great news everyone. I've just got word that the Federal Government will legislate to cap credit card surcharges in Australia.
Until today, we've all been paying a ridiculous $800 million in credit card surcharges when we pay for airfares, taxis, hotels. And the government was ignoring this gouging.
More than 200,000 of you then backed my two petitions on Change.org to Jetstar and the Federal Government – and today they've responded by saying they'll pass new laws to cap these fees.
It's not everything we wanted. I hope the government will consider further action to ensure a complete ban on surcharges – as well as action to make sure the cap isn't increased, and merchants can't introduce this surcharge again by another name.
Please drop a quick email today to Assistant Treasurer Kelly O'Dwyer asking her to meet with me to discuss the new laws and ensure companies can't just re-name their surcharges: kelly.odwyer.mp@aph.gov.au
This action clearly wouldn't have happened today without tens of thousands of you signing on Change.org - and being with me in this fight.
We forced the government to start addressing a totally ignored issue impacting all consumers - a huge achievement! Well done everyone!
Klaus
