I feel victory is getting closer! It is pleasing to finally see a company respond to consumer sentiment and dump their credit card surcharges (often disguised as “booking fees”). Wotif.com is the first major Australian businesses to drop these charges and this will no doubt place huge pressure on the airline and accommodation industry and others who have been ripping us all off for years with these outrageous charges, to follow their lead. All I have ever argued is for the published advertised price to actually be the price for the goods and services that we pay for, and not to have these additional charges, often ranging from 1.5-10% or more being levied on top because we choose to pay by Credit Card. Lord knows what back of the envelope technique is used to calculate these percentages! Wotif said in a statement to petition signers: The changes we're making at Wotif are aimed at giving Australian consumers great travel deals and more travel choices . Wotif has removed hotel and most flight booking fees as well as Wotif credit card fees, as we believe this approach is in the best interests of Aussie travellers. As well as removing hotel booking fees, we have also expanded hotel choices for Wotif customers; Wotif now offers deals at approximately 435,000 hotels across the globe and flights on more than 400 airlines. Note: While Wotif no longer charges change (except for flight bookings outside of a package) or cancellation fees for itinerary changes, some airlines and hotels may still charge additional taxes, change, cancellation and other fees (such as credit card fees, which we unfortunately have to pass on).
