Carly Gustafson started this petition to Jesus Jara and Clark County School District (CCSD)

We are Carly Gustafson, Class of 2021 and Finn Gustafson, Class of 2023. We are both student athletes at Coronado High School. You’ve heard from the protesters, now you will hear from actual student athletes in the Clark County School District.

CARLY: I am a part of the forgotten class of 2021. We are the Seniors who have been forgotten by absolutely everyone.  We have been home since March of 2020, with seemingly no end in sight. As it stands, there will be no Prom (not Junior of Senior Prom for me), no Senior Night, no senior games, and I will not be getting my white letter. I AM A SOCCER PLAYER. This would have been my last year playing for Coronado, my coach, and my teammates who have become like sisters to me! We went to State last year but lost 1-0 and my team and I looked to this season for redemption. My club teams have been practicing, scrimmaging, and playing actual games, some with California teams who have traveled here, since last summer. LAST SUMMER! Games and scrimmages have been played SINCE LAST SUMMER! The Nevada State Cup is going on right now. Multiple teams play at the same time at Bettye Wilson. Parents gather outside the fences to watch. If the State and leagues such as ECNL, can get games together, why can’t CCSD do the same? For Seniors like me, we have had the latter part of junior year taken away and likely most of our last year. This is all we have left. We have had very little socialization and it’s the possibility of playing our sports that has gotten us through this pandemic. To take it away is cruel! It is bad enough that while A LOT of other schools in the country are in session, we are not! Jesus Jara and CCSD, after nearly a year, has failed to come up with a solution to get us back in the classroom. They have again failed to find a way to let us play our fall sports. At this point, we know how to manage the pandemic. We know how to be safe. And we know what’s at stake. LET US PLAY!

FINN:  I am a student athlete, Class of 2023. I play soccer and volleyball. This year has been extremely hard. Trying to learn at home is not my strength. I think I am someone who learns better at school. Playing soccer was all I was looking forward to until CCSD killed that hope. Not being a able to play has been harder on other students, like my sister, and trying to understand why we can’t play when my club team has been playing since the summer of last year and we continued to play our league and State Cup games, has been difficult. While that has been a great outlet for me, it is clear that Jesus Jara and the CCSD fails to understand why we need to play with our high school teams. Our high school teams bring together student athletes from all different classes. It is our one opportunity to play with teammates older than us, who mentor us, and play with those younger than us, those whom we get to mentor. This type of “brotherhood’ is not afforded to us by playing club. In playing club soccer, we play with others our age. We lose out on the mentoring and learning from those older.

Not being to able to play soccer is what my parents call first world problems. And I realize that the pandemic poses serious risks and many people have suffered and passed because of it. And maybe having a bunch of kids playing soccer or their fall sports (clearly to Jesus Jara and CCSD) is not important, but it is to us. IT IS IMPORTANT TO US. It is one of the things that bring students together and it brings what’s left of our school together. It is a big part of who we are as people, and who we are as a school, and who we are as we become adults. Since CCSD can’t figure how get us together in school, this should be the least they can do for us! Reinstate our Fall Sports now! LET US PLAY!

News 8 recently reported that 90% of CCSD schools have assigned more ”F” grades in the Fall of 2020 than in 2019. Student athletes are required to maintain a passing grade if they want to play. Grade checks were typically conducted at the beginning of the week to make sure student athletes kept their grades up in order to be eligible to play games during the week. Accounting for students who have F grades, if they were adhering to grade checks in order to play their sports, maybe F grades would not have been rampant in schools during distance learning.

Kids have taken their own lives since March of last year. We all know that school sports boost school and student morale. These kids may or may not have been student athletes but perhaps they would have had some sense of community if they were able to watch their schools play. Sometimes people just need a sense of belonging and a place to go to get things off their mind.  School sports allows kids to get the feeling of belonging to the school, having a purpose, and belonging to or being a part of something larger.

High school basketball is currently played across America with the exception of 7 states. How have they figured this out and we have yet to?

Casinos are and have been open for a while.  They’re circulating air indoors, and have remained open despite the State posting increasing Covid infections and deaths. Are they more important than us?

Fall sports such as soccer have been played in the valley since late last summer. State Cup games being played at Bettye Wilson have multiple teams playing at any given time. If Nevada Youth Soccer organizations have figured out a way to play and practice, why can’t CCSD? Club teams conduct multi team scrimmages every weekend at Heritage Park. They also practice at Kellogg-Zaher Park multiple times every week with several teams practicing on the same field.

As it stands, we’ve had no proms, with none scheduled in the future, we didn’t have a Homecoming game, we did not have a lot of things. This may seem mundane and insignificant to you, to adults. It means the world to us! These are the things our stories will be made from. The stories we’ll pass on to our partners, to our children, to our grandchildren. Unlike another birthday or another anniversary, we won't have another senior year, or another "last game". This is it. This is a big part of what this pandemic has taken from us. But it doesn’t have to because Jesus Jara and CCSD have the power to change this but they either choose not to or simply do not have the know how to do it and refuses to seek help.

CCSD must reinstate Fall sports for all of Clark County schools!
