Conversion therapy is a discredited, dangerous practice that claims it can “fix” LGBT people. The American Psychiatric Association has determined that anti-gay conversion therapy not only doesn’t work, it increases the risk of depression, anxiety, self-destructive behavior, and suicide. Yet, in many places it is still legal for a minor to be subjected to the process, despite the devastating consequences.

My name is Sam Craig, and I am a LGBT youth in Littleton, Colorado. When I came out, my parents supported me. Had they not, I could have easily fallen victim to conversion therapy. This is what happened to Leelah Alcorn, a name people learned when she committed suicide after her parents forced her into the therapy. I have many closeted friends without the same support network as me, and they fear the same fate. They are why I started this petition.

I am asking for your help to protect minors from conversion therapy in Colorado. Last year, a proposed law to prohibit the therapy for anyone under 18 passed the Colorado House, but was defeated because of opposition from 3 state senators: Jerry Sonnenberg, Ray Scott, and Owen Hill. A new bill banning conversion therapy for minors is back in the Colorado Senate, and the same 3 senators are the key to getting it passed.

Tell State Senators Jerry Sonnenberg, Ray Scott, and Owen Hill that it is time for Colorado to protect our kids. Support and pass Colorado House Bill 16-1210.

By just adding your signature, you can make a difference. After Leelah Alcorn’s suicide, more than 120,000 people signed a petition supporting a law banning conversion therapy. President Obama was so moved, he announced his support for a federal ban. Your support is now needed to convince 3 state senators to do what is right.
