Roommate said she'd kill my service dog: Make threatening people's service dogs a felony
The Issue
My former roommate, who has mental health issues and is an addict, beat my service dog Pippa Middleton, while she was drunk. Last night, she threatened to have the dog killed. She is currently on probation and in court mandated treatment but police have not done anything.
I am disabled, in a wheelchair, and cannot walk. I am currently on a fixed income so I have limited options. While I am trying to get back to work, not being able to walk means you cannot exactly get a job waiting tables, (although I would gladly do that if a place would hire me as a server in a wheelchair), so my options in housing are limited. I should not have to move simply because some people do not understand the laws about service dogs and because cruelty to animals is OK in some sectors of society. My service dog provides companionship to me I often cannot get from humans who are prejudiced towards the disabled.
I am asking Governor Jerry Brown to make attacks on service dogs or threats towards service dogs a felony. Other cities have made cruelty to animals a felony and found other instances of domestic violence. This would be one such case, after I rented a room in the house with this woman, I found out she had her children taken away from her for abuse and neglect. Even with the court mandated classes, she refuses to get sober and I believe her cruelty to the service dog -- as well as threats to hurt me as a disabled person -- reflects her inability to take care of children. Also, when you threaten the service dog, you threaten the disabled person by proxy. Making threatening service dogs or hurting them a felony would provide a way to keep cruel people from hurting other human beings, like innocent children.
