Ear piercing guns cannot be sterilized: The wipes commonly used to clean these guns are alcohol wipes, these do not remove bacteria or bloodborne pathogens, like the ones that cause Hepatitis C. Also, the blood, sweat, and tissue from former clients are all on the gun, wiping it with an alcohol wipe isn't going to get rid of that.
Piercing guns cause BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA to the area: Because a piercing gun is forcing a blunt object (the stud) through flesh using spring-loaded technology (or sometimes just the pressure of someone's grip), the blunt end of the stud crushes and rips through tissue, causing unnecessary damage to the surrounding tissue. This causes excess swelling and scarring, and the effects can last a lifetime!
Piercing guns regularly malfunction: Often, the stud gets jammed halfway through the earlobe, causing pain and distress, and also causing excess scarring and irritation.
Studs used in piercing guns are low quality: They're also way too short to accommodate the normal swelling of a fresh piercing. The backing is pressed so tightly to the ear as well, giving no room to swell. The "butterfly" backs catch bacteria and allow it to grow next to the fresh wound. The "sharp" points of the back also cause discomfort as they "poke" into the neck behind the ear when the person sleeps. A lot of the time the studs also contain nickel. The only materials for piercings that should be used are; steel that is ASTM F138 compliant or ISO 5832-1 compliant, titanium (Ti6Al4V ELI) that is ASTM F136 compliant or ISO 5832-3 compliant or ASTM F67 compliant, solid 14 karat or higher nickel-free white or yellow gold, solid nickel-free platinum alloy, Niobium (Nb), fused quartz glass, lead-free borosilicate or lead-free soda-lime glass, polymers (plastics) as follows: Tygon® Medical Surgical Tubing S-50HL or S-54HL, Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) that is ASTM F754-00 compliant. All these materials allow for minimal irritation and the best healing results without complications.
Ear piercing guns are used by staff with limited training: Often meaning they have very limited understanding of proper sanitation required during piercing procedures.
Ear piercings guns are inaccurate: Resulting in uneven placement and angle. In many cases, it will require a professional piercer to fix these placement problems as many people are unhappy being uneven.

Working in a tattoo & body piercing studio comes with it's cons, seeing clients hurt by these piercing guns is one of them. We've had so many clients coming in with infections and pain from being pierced by a piercing gun. We've even sent people to the E.R. because their infections were so bad they needed antibiotics. Please help us to ban these from use EVERYWHERE. Leave piercing to the professionals!
