Fossil Fuels Are the Energy of the Past: Help California Step into the Future with Bills SB 32, 350, 189, and 185

The Issue

How can I look my grandchildren in the eye and say I knew about this-and did nothing?"(Sir David Attenborough). The effects of climate change are already upon us. Worldwide, people are facing drastic weather patterns, rising ocean levels, crop destruction, and drought. Protecting the environment will not be the fight of the future but the battle of the present. As youth, we have the most to lose from the looming threat of climate change. Our entire future and planet are in jeopardy due to problems we did not create. And contrary to popular belief, we are not obsessing over our cellphones and instagrams, but are taking a stand to fight for our future. This is why we support the passage of California State Bills SB 32, SB 350, SB 189, and SB 185.

These groundbreaking bill proposals aim to tackle climate change by lowering emissions, divesting government dollars from fossils fuels, increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy, and creating government agencies to address climate change. Similar bills addressing climate change are already being implemented in Germany to reduce dependency on Fossil Fuels and since 2011, they have already shifted 27% of their electricity towards renewable energy. If enacted, these bills would also create sustainable jobs to aid the American economy.

Part of these bills have been endorsed by the California Air Resources Board as necessary and doable in order to fend off the worst effects of climate change. However, the Western State Petroleum Association has already voiced its displeasure over one of the bills and there is no doubt that they will fight them all to the end. Failure to protect the planet would be the greatest folly of our time but we do not have to stop fighting. For the sake of the entire planet and generations to come we urge you to sign this petition and help California and the world move towards a more sustainable future.
