Save the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre at the Glenfield Hospital

Today, NHS ENGLAND have announced that they plan not to commission the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre at the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester from next year. This decision appears to be based on their opinion that the centre is unlikely to be able to deliver the target number of operations set by them for a specialist centre. This is despite the centre treating more patients than ever in the last year, and despite major investment in increasing capacity to facilitate the unit reaching target. Patients from Northamptoshire are currently sent to Southampton for surgery when the could be treated at The EMCHC much, much closer to home. NHS ENGLAND could resolve the numbers issue by simply moving this cohort to Leicester. Indeed does this even need to happen when EMCHC delivers a quality of care and clinical outcomes which are amongst the best in the country which in many respects rubbishes the idea that you have to operate on large numbers to be clinically good and safe. EMCHC carried out over 330 procedures last year. We therefore request ministerial intervention on this decision and ask the Government to overrule NHS ENGLAND and ensure they continue to fund EMCHC for the benefit of all patients current and prospective of this unit
