The government is proposing to introduce  a law which will allow scientists to create genetically modified babies by a process called mitochondrial transfer - so-called three parent babies. In a government consultation 62% opposed the plans.This is eugenics dressed up as a cure for babies born with genetic defects. The techniques do not heal but create a new human from the spare parts of two. Nobody has a clue as to the consequences for future generations. The Dept of Health originally promised a full debate by the House of Commons. Now they propose to send the regulations to the Delegated Legislation Committee which can pass the law in a backroom without MPs even noticing let alone voting. To put it mildly this is deceitful. The government does not allow cultivation of GM crops because of the possible harmful effects. Are brassicas more important than babies ? Please ask Jeremy Hunt to ensure that this law is properly debated by all MPs in Parliament.
