Melbourne Zoo, give us a choice of palm oil free icecream

The issue

My Name is Dahli. I'm 10 years old and a huge animal lover. A few years ago, I did a project on the devastating impact the destruction of forests and jungles for palm oil production is having on the habitats of  a lot of special animal in many countries especially in South East Asia.

A few weeks ago, I heard that Melbourne Zoo has a campaign called "Don't palm us Off" that teaches people about the terrible destruction that palm oil is causing and asks zoo visitors to sign a petition to change the labelling of products from "vegetable oil" to "palm oil". I think it's a  great campaign so my  mum and I went to the zoo last week to support them and to  sign the petition.

It feel really good to do that and also to see lots of other visitors signing it and also doing an interactive activity  where we  could scan food and grocery items to see which ones have palm oil and/or don't label "palm oil".

However, I was then  so disappointed to see that Melbourne Zoo is selling Streets ice creams which do not label their palm oil. Streets is owned by Unilever. Uni-lever have so many products with palm oil in them and the company is one of the biggest buyers of palm oil in the world.  They promised to use all sustainable or traced palm oil worldwide by 2015.  This didn't happen and now they are saying it will be by 2020. This is too long to wait. Orang-utans, tigers and lots of other beautiful animals are losing their habitats and dying now.

Zoos Victoria, your "Don't Palm us off" campaign is such a good one.  But, I have to say I think  you are being hypocritical by selling the products that you are campaigning against. Maybe you need to sell them as you have a contract with Streets.

But, I and this petition,  are asking you to please give zoo visitors the  CHOICE to buy palm oil free ice cream. In 2014, your friends at Adelaide Zoo did this.  At this zoo there  is a choice of Streets or Golden North (palm oil free) ice cream. These two companies share the fridge space. Please give Victorian zoo visitors this choice too.

For the animals.

This is part of Melbourne's Zoo's campaign and pictured is Magnum which they sell.
