Enshrine Rights and Equal Privileges: An Advocacy Campaign for Indigenous People
The Issue
Rights and Privileges should be served to everyone. Regardless of race or ethnicity, everyone should have equal treatment in this society. According to the estimation of Episcopal Commission on Tribal Filipinos (ECTF), there were approximately 6.5 million indigenous people. It is about 10 percent of Philippine population.
Indigenous people are being marginalized because of their ethnicity. They were being belittled because others believed that they are nothing compared to the people who doesn’t belong to them. This discrimination somehow rooted from the privileges they received. One of this is not having enough schools that could educate them.
Other citizens and the government don’t give importance to the rights of the Indigenous people. It was being disregarded. Since the early Spanish colonial period, all forest lands have legally belonged to the state, and most indigenous peoples have long inhabited the forest, although they have the rights to ancestral domains and lands. Their rights to cultural integrity were also being disregarded because of the fact that there were no powerful programs to protect their culture and traditions.
This advocacy campaign aims to raise awareness to ensure that the rights and privileges of Indigenous people will be protected and respected. We are looking forward for having more schools near the area of Indigenous people and have health facilities to reach them. We desire to have their ancestral lands back to them. Also, we strive for programs to help preserving their traditions and cultures. We aim to reach out to our national government so that they can do something about this.
