Eminent Domain is defined as “the power to take private property for public use by the state, municipalities, and private persons or corporations authorized to exercise functions of public character.” Basically, it is the right of the government to force landowners to turn over their homes and land for “the public good.” Though some leaders in Jefferson County have claimed that eminent domain will not be used to remove the 100+ home and farm owners targeted by the megasite proposal, it is clear to us that, since more than 50% of the land targeted will not be willingly sold, the only way for the currently proposed megasite to move forward will be through the use of eminent domain. We would ask you, as homeowners, as neighbors, to contact the county commission and let them know that you cannot agree with the taking of our properties through eminent domain. If we stand together, we can save this beautiful and historic area targeted to be turned into a concrete jungle. Tell your commissioner to find another location for the megasite by signing this Petition.
