Get Armon back on the mats

The Issue

Armon Nettey transferred schools within the county (Sherwood to Springbrook) in order to help his  family, since his mother, a single mother, began working additional hours. Armon was granted a Change of School Assignment (COSA) from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to Springbrook on the grounds of hardship and begun picking his little brother up at a daycare near Springbrook after school in the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year.
He was a part of the wrestling team at Sherwood and wished to wrestle at Springbrook. Due to a rule that Montgomery county has that requires transfer students to have a waiver to participate in athletic activities before a one-year waiting period, his mom applied for the waiver, since he was on a COSA. Although his family was approved for the COSA based on hardship, Dr. Jeffery Sullivan denied it, without giving reason to his family. Therefore, despite the hardship, he cannot compete on Springbrook’s wrestling team.
Despite the fact that Armon has moved into the Springbrook district he is still being denied the opportunity to wrestle. The denial is coming from MCPS Administrators. Armon is a 17 year old senior who was recognized as a promising recruit and gaining the interest of division two and three schools however time is winding down for his season which is hurting his chances of receiving an athletic scholarship. The athletic director of Montgomery County, Jeffery Sullivan has denied this request for a waiver and many other officials have not stated why. Wrestling is an extremely important aspect of Armon’s life as far as opportunities for scholarships, wrestling has given him a community.

Montgomery County staff and students, please sign this petition to show your support for Armon so that he may get back on the mats.
