Walker County has been under an antiquated sole-commissioner style of governance for over 70 years.

Having one single person lead a government representing 70,000 people, with a massive budget and minimal accountability, is a relic of the past. One individual cannot effectively oversee every aspect of county government and listen to the needs or wishes of this many people. It isn't fair to the leader or to the people they represent.

Unfortunately the citizens of Walker County haven't had a chance to vote on keeping (or dropping) the Sole Commissioner system in a generation. Such a vote can only be held if the General Assembly allows it AND decides to listen to the results of such a vote.

To settle the issue and find out if the people of Walker County still want to have a sole commissioner or a board made of multiple elected representatives, the county's legislative delegation must pass a resolution during the 2015 General Assembly session calling for a vote on the county's form of government.

We are not asking legislators to change the system, only asking that they let US vote for ourselves to change, or retain, sole commissioner government in the county. A local vote, local control, for the system of government that impacts us most closely.
