Change.org deactivates petitions after a year, but it's not time to throw in the towel. So I've reactivated this thing and am back with another call to action.
The anniversary of the horrific Parkland shooting just came & went - and all we got were a ton of think pieces, hot takes & news retrospectives around the anniversary.
The blame for inaction on gun violence lays at the feet of our politicians in statehouses and Washington, DC. That blame is equally owned by both parties. Forget your partisan allegiances - the insane money in politics creates an incentive to maintain the status quo. Even the so-called champions of gun reform in Congress are mostly putting out bogus & unrealistic suggestions. Like the Green New Deal or the Great Mexican Wall, pie in the sky ideas inspire votes but don't do squat to fix our problems. Sorry if you love those ideas, but they have 0.0% chance of happening.
One REAL way to pressure these politicians is to put our money where our mouths are and demand private sector leaders like Amazon act like responsible corporate citizens. People are waking up to this company's utter contempt for regular Americans (see: last week's nasty breakup between Amazon & NYC, which made headlines all over the world).
Big changes start with small moves. And getting Amazon to stop promoting gun companies is one such move. Amazon has a responsibility to the public given the outsized impact it has on society, and it needs to take a stand on promoting gun companies to children. Remember that less than 10% of American gun owners are NRA members. Getting Amazon to take NRATV off its platforms isn't censorship or hurting gun owners - critics don't understand the real definition of the word - it's simply asking Amazon to stop endorsing gun sales to kids.
So let's keep sharing this petition on Twitter & Facebook. And calling Amazon (206-266-7180) to demand action. And cancelling those Amazon Prime memberships.
Small steps...
