Pressure Jeff Bezos to Fund & Resolve Aid for the Yemen Humanitarian Crisis
Why this petition matters
“Yemen is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with more than 24 million people – some 80 per cent of the population – in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 12 million children.” (UNICEF)
The crisis in Yemen has endured for nearly 10 years now, where political disruption has led to war. This has evolved into collapsed healthcare systems, extreme famine, epidemics, and more for the country. Not to mention, the current COVID-19 pandemic has escalated the situation, as “some 75 percent of UN programmes in Yemen have had to shut their doors or reduce operations. The global body's World Food Programme had to cut rations in half and UN-funded health services were reduced in 189 out of 369 hospitals nationwide” (Al Jazeera). This combination of circumstances has created the deadliest crisis in the world, impacting and killing millions of people.
Previous donation goals created by the U.N. have fallen short, and not long ago, the United States, who was the largest donor, has decreased its monetary aid. Funding for aid has not been adequate enough, and if we continue on this trend, it will lead to an even worse crisis.
The U.N. has recently stated that the cost of sustaining essential activities through Yemen’s collapsed healthcare system and famine would total to $2.41 billion from June to December 2020. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, has a current net worth of $166.3 billion (and rising daily). This means that Bezos could easily and comfortably fund the aid for the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and save lives. Billionaires need to be held accountable and spread their wealth to those who desperately need it! We need to act now and pressure Bezos to resolve the cost before millions more die!
