A demand for the resignation of the President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem
This petition had 356 supporters
Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem’s recent comment that "You cannot spend everything on drinks and women and then ask for help,” perceived as an attack on Southern European citizens and their politicians, is insulting , misogynist and xenophobic. It is also completely incompatible with the values of the European Union, as expressed in its treaties and other formal statements of its underlying principles.
Institutions such as the Eurogroup, which are of immense importance in the lives of millions of Europeans, should therefore follow the principles of the European Union. And, if that is the case, Mr Dijsselbloem should not be in a position to remain as its president. Yet, despite being asked to apologise, Mr Dijsselbloem has refused to do so .
Keeping Mr Dijsselbloem as president of the Eurogroup, therefore, is to serve the wave of xenophobic populism that threatens the future of the European Union. In consequence, we must demand his immediate resignation. Enforcing his resignation is the responsibility of the governments represented in the Eurogroup, but the European Commission is still the guardian of the European Union’s treaties and statements. It is therefore the duty of the President of the Commission to remind the member-states of the Eurogroup of their obligations in this respect.
